Our Work And Mission

Mission Statement:

Rainbow Advocacy Society of BC (RASBC) is dedicated to providing advocacy that creates access to healthcare, mental health, housing, and social sustainability for 2SLGBTQ+ people.

Values:

At RASBC, we believe that every individual should be treated with respect and dignity, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. We recognize that these aspects of an individual's identity are influenced by various social characteristics such as race, ethnicity, age, ability, status, class, faith, and culture. We take an intersectional approach to our work and strive to fight all forms of oppression to promote equity for all people.

Vision:
We envision a future where all 2SLGBTQ+ individuals in BC have access to culturally appropriate healthcare, mental health, housing, and social sustainability services. We are committed to collaborating with like-minded societies, organizations, groups, and people at all levels of governance to support and advocate for the needs of our community. We strive to establish positive gains that provide greater access to social sustainability and create overall wellness for 2SLGBTQ+ people.

What we do: Advocate – Collaborate - Inform

RASBC advocates for the creation and/or improvements of culturally appropriate services for 2SLGBTQ+ seniors. We collaborate with service providers to inform and support their 2SLGBTQ+ services and provide training for service providers and students on working with 2SLGBTQ+ seniors. We provide public presentations on the needs and challenges faced by aging 2SLGBTQ+ people and how to adapt services to accommodate them. We also provide information to 2SLGBTQ+ seniors on available services and support individuals to self-advocate for their needs. Finally, we partner on, promote, and support research on the needs of 2SLGBTQ+ seniors and best practices on how to meet their needs.

Overall, RASBC is committed to creating a future where all 2SLGBTQ+ individuals in BC have access to necessary services and are treated with respect and dignity.

    Darlene Bown

The need to create RASBC came from many discussions with members of our community to creat a place that would help advocate for us and across our province. My career has been in the healthcare field and the labour movement with equity work in a leadership role. My community experience has included servicing on national organizations boards and local community societies. Creating networks is key to the change that we want to have happen and building the supports that we need.
